Additional Information

Full-frame image capture in low light

The FX3’s full-frame image sensor is equipped with innovative light-gathering technologies to capture clear images even in low-light environments. The standard ISO sensitivity for movies ranges from 80 to 102400 and can be expanded up to 409600.

Wide dynamic range, greater expressiveness

The FX3 offers an exceptional dynamic range of over 15 stops for both indoor and brightly lit outdoor scenes, at any time of day. Capture every detail and enjoy unprecedented cinematic freedom in colour grading.

Stunning bokeh and full-frame creativity

Capture scenes in cinematic 4K resolution with shallow depth of field, beautiful bokeh, and the creative freedom provided by a full-frame sensor.

Cinematic colour science with S-Cinetone™

The S-Cinetone colour profile, developed for Sony’s FX9, comes preloaded in the FX3 for cinematic expression. It has been tuned to meet the needs of modern content creators, with rich colours and natural skin tones that can be matched with other Cinema Line cameras without grading.

Full-focus 4K at 120fps

Even at high frame rates, the FX3 captures detailed 4K images thanks to high-precision AF and fast readout. The Slow and Quick mode gives you full control over capture frame rates, enabling beautiful slow-motion sequences up to 5x (with 24p output).

10-bit S-Log3 and HDR recording for smooth grading

The S-Log3 gamma curve and S-Gamut3.Cine enable high-quality colour reproduction with wide dynamic range and simplify matching with other Cinema Line cameras in post-production. The HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) profile supports direct HDR playback on compatible TVs without post-production.

16-bit RAW HDMI output

For demanding post-production workflows, the FX3 offers 16-bit RAW output via HDMI to compatible external recorders, while simultaneously recording XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K or XAVC S-I 4K and proxy files internally. The RAW video output resolution is 4264 x 2408 [16:9], exceeding DCI-4K resolution.

Rich detail and true-to-life colour

The FX3 records 4K internally in 10-bit 4:2:2 colour with both All Intra and Long GOP compression. This allows for advanced colour grading and preserves natural tonal transitions, offering complete freedom in post-production.

Reliable, accurate autofocus

The intelligent tracking AF uses focal plane phase detection to follow the subject across the entire frame. Fast Hybrid AF offers precise focusing, even with shallow depth of field and at high 120p 4K (QFHD) frame rates.

Refined AF tracking for stability

Tracking keeps the focus locked on the subject so you can focus on composition. Real-time Eye AF ensures sharp focus on faces and eyes, while Real-time Tracking uses Sony’s unique AI-based recognition algorithms.

Smooth transitions and touch focus control

The FX3 offers 7 levels of AF Transition Speed to easily create rack focus effects, and 5 levels of Subject Shift Sensitivity to customise how quickly or firmly AF locks onto a subject. Subjects can be selected directly via the LCD touch screen.

High-performance E-mount lenses for filmmaking

Autofocus is responsive thanks to Sony’s E-mount lenses, which offer top-tier optical performance and operability for cinematic applications. Their unique linear actuator technology provides smoother, more precise AF performance.

High mobility performance anywhere

Compact and lightweight, the FX3 is designed for maximum mobility. The detachable handle and multiple mounting threads make for quick setup and fluid shooting. The body and covers are made of lightweight magnesium alloy for durability and performance in challenging environments.

Detachable XLR handle

The handle with dual XLR inputs can be attached to the camera’s Multi-Interface (MI) shoe for added comfort and stability during challenging shooting situations, such as low-angle capture.

In-body image stabilisation

The Active Mode is a 5-axis image stabilisation system that improves handheld movie shooting. A gyro sensor precisely measures camera movement and optically compensates for it, allowing for stable 4K video capture without the need for a gimbal.

[3, 4] Shift (X and Y axes)

Easier stabilisation and editing with Catalyst

Motion data recorded by the built-in gyro allows for smoother post-production stabilisation. With the Catalyst Browse/Catalyst Prepare app, users can fine-tune the balance between auto shake compensation and image crop. Catalyst makes use of efficiently recorded camera rotation metadata.

Front and rear tally lamps

Front and rear tally lamps clearly indicate when the FX3 is recording, visible to both the camera operator and the subject.

Vari-angle LCD touch panel

The side-opening 3.0-type touch screen (1.44 million dots) offers flexible positioning and enhanced visibility when the camera is mounted on a gimbal. It also provides intuitive menu and setting control.

Controls for efficient solo shooting

With six custom buttons and the most-used controls positioned within easy reach of one hand, the other hand remains free for lens operation or balancing. Multiple threaded holes on the body and handle enable direct accessory mounting.

Uninterrupted 4K/60p recording

To ensure uninterrupted 4K/60p recording, the FX3 features an innovative heat dissipation system. The positioning of the heat sink, airflow structure, and silent fan are all optimised for effective cooling during extended shoots.

XLR adapter and digital input for high-quality audio

In addition to the built-in microphone, professional external microphones can be connected to the standard XLR inputs on the handle via the digital audio interface of the MI shoe. Three recording formats are available, including 4-channel 24-bit audio. Digital audio recording is also possible with a digital microphone like the ECM-B1M, even without the handle.

Dual slots for high-speed cards

Designed for next-gen creators, CFexpress Type A cards support high-bitrate recording. The dual slots support both CFexpress Type A and standard SDXC UHS-I/UHS-II cards, and their identical structure allows seamless switching and backup recording.

Network transfer and remote camera control

Wi-Fi® or wired connection via USB Type-C enables remote control via smartphone or tablet, with one-touch or manual pairing via NFC. Remote shooting is possible through a PC using Sony’s Imaging Edge Desktop™, or through mobile devices with Imaging Edge Mobile™. Still and video files can be transferred via high-speed FTP.

Remote preview, capture, and streaming

Wired or wireless remote shooting with PC or mobile devices is supported via Imaging Edge Mobile, ideal for challenging environments and efficient workflows. Imaging Edge Webcam™ offers high-quality video communication via webcam functionality.

The table below shows the approximate total recording times using a memory card formatted with this camera. The values may vary depending on the shooting conditions and the type of memory card used.

page446image3600176672

(h (hour), min (minute))

The recording times when [ page446image3829526832Proxy Recording] is set to [OFF]

The times shown are recordable times using a Sony memory card.
The duration of time available for movie recording varies depending on the file format/recording settings for movies, memory card, ambient temperature, Wi-Fi network environment, condition of the camera before you start recording, and condition of the charging of the battery.
The maximum continuous recording time for a single movie shooting session is approximately 13 hours (a product specification limit).

Note

The recordable time of movies varies because the camera is equipped with VBR (Variable Bit-Rate), which automatically adjusts image quality depending on the shooting scene. When you record a fast-moving subject, the image is clearer but the recordable time is shorter because more memory is required for recording. The recordable time also varies depending on the shooting conditions, the subject or the image quality/size settings.
